TEACHING and DIVERSITY Greetings! QUILL's August 2003 issue devotes most of its coverage in this annual education issue to diversity. It includes online resources about diversity and disability concerns and trends as well as a number of articles on these topics. One article offers a list of minority faculty members recently appointed to management positions in journalism/mass comm schools. This issue of QUILL is shelved with our Park Library's current serials. Thursday, August 28, 2003
PARK LIBRARY HOURS: LABOR DAY, SEPT. 1, 2003 Greetings! Our Park Library will be closed from 5:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29 through Monday, Sept. 1, 2003. We will reopen at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003. FACULTY AUTHORED BOOKS Greetings! Noting from our last faculty meeting the number of faculty-authored books recently (or soon to be) published, I thought it wise to alert you that our Park Library showcases these scholarly contributions in our Spearman Collection. This collection is located inside the Park Library's entrance in one of our lighted display cases. Please take time to examine them. Consider this a plea for a gift of book(s) you have currently or previously authored to our Park Library. If you are uncertain if our Spearman has your book(s), you can search the ONLine Catalog. Here's how to discover what our Park Library has in its Spearman Collection: 1. Open this URL http://www.lib.unc.edu 2. Click on "UNC-Chapel Hill Catalog" 3. In the "Select Search Type" pop-down box, choose "Call Number" 4. In the "Enter Search" box, type SPE-fac (That unique Park Library call number stands for "SPEarman - FACulty authored books) 5. View the results, but be advised that a few titles in our Spearman Collection *may not* be in this ONLine Catalog. That happens because our Library has the only copy. In such a case, you may have to personally check this Collection in our Library to verify that your book(s) are indeed included. Or contact me via email semonch@metalab.unc.edu to check for you PARK LIBRARY BOOK GIFTS Greetings! Recent books offered to our Park Library include: 1. NEWS PHOTOGRAPHER MAGAZINE INDEX Ahhhh, there is good news today. Mr. Jim Gordon, Professor emeritus of journalism at Bowling Green State University, compiled a detailed index to News Photographer Magazine Index, 1978-2003. This 87 page index (in pdf) will be printed and kept next to our bound volumes of News Photographer in our Park Library stacks. Mr. Gordon originally created this index for his own personal use and now demonstrates his generosity by making it available without cost to libraries. There are some mighty fine people out there, folks. It's wonderful to find them. NEW ACQUISITIONS Here is an update on our latest acquisitions: 1. The Chicago Manual of Style. 15th edition (the most recent). This is a much-appreciated gift from Prof. Chuck Stone. It will shelved with the rest of our Library's style manuals. 2. Writing to Deadline: The Journalist at Work. By Donald M. Murray. Published by Heinemann Press, 2000. [Note: more about this Pulitzer Prize winning writer and Boston Globe columnist can be found at http://www.nhc.edu/general/awards/murray.htm. This book will be shelved with the other books on writing. 3. The Journalist's Craft: A Guide to Writing Better Stories. Edited by Dennis Jackson & John Sweeney. Published by Allworth Press, 2002. ALMANAC OF HIGHER EDUCATION The Chronicle's "Almanac of Higher Education" for 2002-3 will be posted on the Web site on Monday, August 25, 2003. It includes a wealth of national and state-by-state data on colleges and universities and their students, faculty and staff members, and finances. This CHE site is password protected. Our Park Library has a password. However, since this Almanac is huge, it might be wiser to wait until the hard copy arrives in our Library. BTW, we archive these special Alamacs and have almost all back issues from 1990. Monday, August 18, 2003
IN THE NEWS: BLACKOUT RESOURCES Resource tip from IRE's research director, Carolyn Edds, on covering the blackout and related disasters. IRE has compiled some resources to help cover the blackout that hit dozens of cities in the United States and Canada this afternoon, including New York; Cleveland, Detroit, Toronto and Ottawa. Those resources, which are still being updated with more information, can be found at http://www.ire.org/inthenews_archive/blackout.html. Some of the resources available from the Web page include: --A list of Web sites from a chapter of "The Investigative Reporter's Handbook" about investigating utilities. --Internet resources from government Web sites, including databases of power plants, energy generation, electric purchases, sales, power systems incidents, and state-level spreadsheets with various energy statistics. --Tipsheets available from the IRE Resource Center that deal with covering electric utilities. --Information about the IRE and NICAR Database Library's federal contracts database, which includes details about a government contractor that also has contracted with the Niagara-Mohawk Power Grid. Officials say a failure in that grid is responsible for the blackouts. NEWSPAPER DEMOGRAPHICS The July/August 2003 issue of American Demographics offers an interesting article on newspapers turning demographic declines into gains through digitization, customization, and marketing basics. No real surprises here, but Peter Francese' brief article does put together facts and figures in a cogent fashion. A related article in this same issue, "Good News, Bad News," by Matthew Grimm suggests that mainstream American news organizations may be missing the real scoop in the race of "eyeballs." While a little heavy on jargon, the article offers an interesting perspective on international newspapers. American media is taken to task for ignoring stories on the buildup to war in Iraq that European media tackled. This issue of American Demographics is on the Park Library's current periodicals shelves. Wednesday, August 06, 2003
