RARE 19TH & 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS DONATED TO DUKE UNIVERSITY Greetings! A 5,000-volume collection containing many rare and historically important 19th and 20th century American newspapers has been donated to Duke University Libraries in April 2004 by novelist and essayist Nicholson Baker. http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/news/newspapers_0404.html Mr. Baker gained some notariety for his well-publicized assault on libraries newspaper microfilming practices. His 2001 book, Double Fold, is available in our Park Library. With libraries across the world getting rid of their print editions of historic newspapers, the new collection at Duke will be one of the few places where they will be available. WORLD PRESS REVIEW -30- Greetings! From The Chronicle of Higher Education 5/11/2004 Daily Report: A glance at the May issue of "World Press Review": A farewell to publication in print The magazine, which publishes reprints and translations of articles from outside the United States, is celebrating its 30th anniversary but ceasing publication in print. According to its editor, Alice Chasan, the magazine has been "a vehicle for awakening Americans to the diverse perspectives and priorities of the world around them and deepening their understanding of their fellow human beings." In a separate note, Richard H. Stanley, president of the Stanley Foundation, which publishes the magazine, explains that the print edition is being abandoned because of the increasing subsidies required to run it. The foundation has decided to redirect those resources, he says, toward its objective of "promoting and building support for principled multilateralism in addressing international issues." Ms. Chasan writes: "If a magazine is a conversation between its creators and its readers, our conversation is drawing to a close. To the readers on the other side of the conversation, I give my thanks for the spirited give-and-take, as well as for your recognition of the vital role 'World Press Review' has played in bringing English-speaking readers into the global debates of our time." It its final issue, the magazine features articles on six current news topics, along with excerpts from its archives that shed light on the history of those topics. The magazine's Web site will continue at http://www.worldpress.org Best regards, Barbara Semonche Monday, May 10, 2004
