MORE ARTICLES OF INTEREST

The June 2004 issue of BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA has at least a couple of articles worthy of note. The in-depth report on Latino labor influences in North Carolina, Edward Martin, offers photos, data and stories about Latino construction workers in North Carolina. Also included is a list of North Carolina's top 20 general contractors, number of employees and 2003 revenue figures. [Factoid: Latinos make up 5% of North Carolina's population. Twenty-five died on the job last year. That's 16% of all workplace deaths. The state doesn't know how many were construction workers.]

The other noteworthy mention in the June issue of BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA is a brief (with a color photo) about Chris Roush. It focused not only on the "busienss" side of Chris, but on his passion about sports, especially baseball.

Our Park Library doesn't have a subscription to the NEW YORKER magazine, so it was a welcome surprise when John Stephens from The Institute of Government forwarded to me the January 5, 2004 issue. This issue featured a long article by Lawrence Wright titled "The Kingdom of Silence" describing his experiences on a job at a Saudi newspaper office. Wright's first assignment was to help local reporters cover the 2003 hajj. If anyone is interested in reading this article, please check with me.

From Chuck Stone comes a gift subscription to THE GAY & LESBIAN REVIEW. Issues will be shelved in our current periodicals section in our Park Library's reading area.

JOMC FACULTY and ALUM AUTHORED ARTICLES

Here is a sampling of recent articles authored by our faculty members and alums. Interested readers will find these journal articles in our Park Library's serials collection.

1. C. A. Tuggle: ESPN's SportsCenter and Coverage of Women's Athletics: "It's a Boys' Club." Published in Spring 2004 issue of MASS COMMUNICATION & SOCIETY.
[Abstract: "Since the passage of Title IX in 1972, participation in women's sports has grown dramatically. But despite the growing level of participation by female athletes at all competition levels and documented fan interest in women's athletics, coverage of women's sports remains inferior to that given male sports across all media. Tuggle's 1997 study showed that two national highlights programs (CNN's Sports Tonight and ESPN's SportsCenter) devoted only 5% of their airtime to women's athletics. This study is a replication of Tuggle's original study to determine whether the existence of two women's professional sports leagues has resulted in increased coverage of female athletics. Results of the 2002 study show that the answer is no. Indeed there was less coverage of women on SportsCenter during the 2002 study than there was during the earlier examination."]

2. Philip Meyer: The Inflence Model and Newspaper Business. Published in Winter 2004 issue of NEWSPAPER RESEARCH JOURNAL.
[Abstract: "The influence model posits that newspaper content quality increases societal influence and news credibility. Both drive circulation and profitability. The link between credibility and circulation is supported with a sample of newspapers in communities supported by the Knight Foundation."]

3. Linda J. Lumsden (associate professor in the School of Journalism and Broadcasting at Western Kentucky University): Journalism Collections at the University of Wyoming's American Heritage Center. Published in Spring 2004 issue of JOURNALISM HISTORY.
[Note: Lumsden describes the collections of 25 journalists' papers including the papers of radio pioneer Irene Corbally Kuhn and the papers of TV game show host Hugh Downs.]

NEW INTERNATIONAL RESOURCE FOR PARK LIBRARY

Greetings!

Following Bob Stevenson's excellent text and image report of his recent trip to China is this announcement of the arrival of "Encyclopedia of International Media and Communications," 2003, Academic Press.

This four-volume work covers a broad spectrum of topics on media including media types, formats, outlets, genres, issues, concepts, geopolitical studies, historic views, and future projections. The editor-in-chief is Donald H. Johnson from Columbia University. Over 200 media scholars and practioners representing 82 countries contributed to this encyclopedia. A quick scan of the contributors indicated that at least two of our faculty members were credited with articles: Peggy Blanchard ("Freedom of the Press in the United States") and Bob Stevenson ("National Development and Communications".)

As soon as this reference work is cataloged, it will be ready for viewing . . . in our Park Library, of course.

JoMC Prof. Peggy Blanchard's bequest

Hello, all:

Peggy's bequests expand. Apparently it is her wish that all her
books be donated to The Park Library. She had an impressive collection of
materials on the First Amendment as well as journalism history and from my
first cull through her office I discovered some gems.

In her office collection, Peggy has vintage volumes as well as
current books many of which are new to our Park Library. Some of the
titles are not in Davis Library's collection making them unique on our
campus. Those few books which are duplicates of titles in our Park Library
will be donated to the journalism school library in Liberia.

Soon I will check what books are in Peggy's house and have them
moved to our Library. It will probably take quite a while, perhaps a year
or more, to get these books cataloged and shelved. I will keep you all
posted.

I came across one interesting volume in Peggy's office. It was her
1981 dissertation, "Americans First, Newspapermen Second?" Some noted UNC-CH
scholars signed off on her work: John Semonche, J. Carlyle Sitterson, John
B. Adams, Robert Miller, and Daniel Pollitt. This scholarly work will be
shelved in our faculty Spearman Collection.

Best regards,

Barbara Semonche, Park Library Director
