Hurricane Hugo: 15th anniversary Greetings! Today, September 22, is the 15th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo's direct hit on Charleston, South Carolina. Many of us in North Carolina will recall that hurricane's deadly force on Charlotte in 1989. In the midst of the devastation of recent hurricane onslaughts onFlorida, the gulf states, as well as North Carolina, it may be worthwhileto remember past similar tragedies and struggles. Charleston's newspaper, The News and Courier, somehow keptpublishing. How it did is another story. JoMC's Jo Bass lived through thatdevastation. With great effort she managed to collect all the editionspublished at that time. Recently she donated them to our Park Library.Selected issues are displayed in the exhibit cases outside our ParkLibrary. They serve as a reminder of the Charleston citizens who prevailedduring that hot, soggy, dark time. Also inluded in the exhibit are lists of previous category 5hurricanes and the devastation in property and lives they brought. We encourage you and your students to view the exhibits.
