Subject: How does The Park Library select books, serials, databases for its collections?
Greetings!
I've been asked how I determine what books, databases, and journalsubscriptions to acquire for our Park Library. Before I reply in full, I need toemphasize that as with most librarians I am strongly influenced by facultyrecommendations. Balanced, of course, by budgetary constraints.
Therefore, if our faculty members have special requests for materials thatshould unquestionably become part of our Library's collections, please send me anemail with all the relevant ordering information. Let's say we limit recommendationsto the top three on your "Desiderata List."
The best way to determine whether or not our Library already has the materialyou need is to check the UNC ONline Catalog <http://www.lib.unc.edu>
Also, if I need to acquire current editions of existing materials, please let me knowthat as well.
Now, here are the reliable resources (other than faculty recommendations)that I typically consult before purchasing materials:
* Catalogs (for books, films, journals)
* JoMC faculty syllabi
* Book reviews (in scholarly, trade journals)
* Mass Communication Bibliographers' recommendations
* Poynter Institute for Media Studies bibliographies
* CBQ: Communication Booknotes Quarterly
* Communication Research Trends
* ACRL Web site "Library Resources for Communications Studies" <http://www.lib.washington.edu/subject/communications/lrcs/>

Bear in mind that the cost of library materials is rising steadily. To meetthe demand for the latest and the best library resources, I have to make carefulchoices to accommodate our library's budget. If any of you have research funds (orother sources) to help bear the cost of some of these high-ticket purchases, pleaselet me know. The book donations that many of our faculty and some of our staff havemade recently have been exceptionally beneficial.
If you have questions about my selection policies, please contact me in myoffice or send me an email message. I'll be happy to talk with you.

Best regards,
Barbara P. Semonche, Director, The Park Library

Subject: [jomcfac] New Federal Law Requires Colleges to Present Educational Programs about the U.S. Constitution Every Sept. 17.

Greetings!
According to the August 25, 2005 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education:
" COLLEGES ARE RESPONDING in big and small ways to a new federal law that requires them to present educational programs about the U.S. Constitution every September 17. Some institutions are still scrambling to develop such programs just as the academic year is getting under way.
. . . . "The requirement, designating the anniversary of the signing of theConstitution as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, was inserted into a spendingbill last fall by Sen. Robert C. Byrd, a Democrat of West Virginia (The Chronicle,December 3, 2004). It covers all educational institutions that receive federal funds.When September 17 falls on a weekend, as it does this year, institutions may hold events during the preceding or following weeks, according to guidelines issued in Mayby the U.S. Education Department.
"The new law does not provide federal funds to defray the cost of colleges' programs,and the Education Department does not plan to monitor compliance. . . ."
A search of UNC-CH's web site revealed that there are *some* plans onschedule to offer such a program. Reactions are mixed, however. Here is a link<http://www.isthatlegal.org/archives/2005/06/compulsory_unif.html>
I have a copy of the CHE's article in my office if anyone is interested inreading it. The Chronicle of Higher Education has its articles available onLexisNexis, *but* it delays the current issue for at least a week or two.

Subject: [jomcfac] Book Review: "My Freshman Year: What a Professor Learned by Becoming a Student"
Greetings!
Our Park Library is not going to purchase this book, but it just might makefor some intriguing reading. Here is a link to Newsweek's Aug. 22, 2005 book reviewby Daniel McGinn:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8938146/site/newsweek/
The anthropology prof used a psuedonym and didn't identify the college studied. Themotivation to do this research came from her years of experiences teaching andwondering about such seeming trends as why students felt free to eat in class and whyso few students avoided the assigned readings.
Davis Library doesn't have the book yet, but I'll bet that it will soon.

Best regards,
Barbara P. Semonche, Director, The Park Library

Subject: [jomcfac] JMC Quarterly Book Reviews: JoMC faculty members and alums dominate
Greetings!
This may be something of a record, but I cannot be certain. Still, havingbook reviews from four JoMC faculty members plus four JoMC alums published in theSummer 2005 issue of JMCQ is impressive, considering that there were only a total of22 book reviews. One of our faculty members, Barbara Friedman, had two separatereviews published in this issue. Perhaps the fact that JMCQ's book editor is JoMCfaculty member Pat Curtin and that her editorial assistant is Dan Haygood, a JoMCalum, *may* have had *some* influence.
OK, here is the list:
JOMC FACULTY MEMBERS

Subject: [jomcfac] JoMC Faculty Member and Alum articles in American Journalism
Greetings!
The Spring 2005 issue of American Journalism carries two articles of specialinterest to our School.
Barbara Friedman's article, "The Soldier Speaks": Yank Coverage of Women andWartime Work, considers "....the ways that Yank, a World War II-era armed servicesweekly, depicted women's wartime employment at a time when public sentiment wasstrongly opposed to it...."

JoMC alum, W. Joseph Campbell's article, "The Grudging Emergence of AmericanJournalism' Classic Editorial: New Details about "Is there a Santa Claus?" revealsthat The Sun's reluctant embrace of the famed editorial likely stemmed from thenewspaper's disinclination to promote is journalists as stars or celebrities...."

As more scholarly and trade articles by our JoMC faculty members appear I'll be happy to alert this list.

Subject: [jomcfac] AEJMC Conference Papers Presented by UNC-CH JoMC Faculty Members and Grad Students
Greetings!
In 2003 and 2004 our Park Library created lists of the AEJMC conferencepapers presented by our JoMC faculty members and grad students. We are preparing todo this for the 2005 conference. We'll be relying on the AEJMC conference program tostart the list. However, if any of our faculty members or grad students note thattheir presentations are *not* included in the program, please send me the information(title of paper and author(s) as well as the AEJMC Division(s))so I can have acomplete listing.

Subject: [jomcfac] Park Library's "Gray Literature" (Reports and Proceedings) Now Cataloged
Greetings!
It took most of the summer, but thanks to the talent and organization skillsof Park Fellow Nicole Smith, we now have subject access to our large collection (811items) of reports and proceedings.
You may view the data in spreadsheet format at this URL:
http://parklibrary.jomc.unc.edu/collections.html#report
To open the file, simply click on "collection of reports and conference proceedings."You may also click on a text description of this "gray literature" collection." Notethat this collection is cataloged using the same classification system we devised foras our books and monographs collections in our Park Library.

If you have any questions about this important, and hitherto difficult tolocate material, please contact me. I'll be happy to help.

BTW, to my knowledge, our cataloging of this "gray literature" is not typicalfor journalism-mass comm libraries. In fact, it is exceptional. The verbal bouquetsgo to Nicole Smith. She is a champ!
