Sources for finding examples of photo essays:

  • Full-text databases (Newsbank, Lexis/Nexis Academic) Note: only text accompanying photos, but not the photos themselves, are offered in these databases.
    Sample searches:  HLEAD (hispanic or latino);  (hispanic or latino) AND immigration;  (hispanic or latino) AND deportation;  (hispanic or latino) AND education
     

  • Online search engines (Google - images)
    Note: also view SearchEngineShowdown for other useful search engines.
     

  • North Carolina online newspapers (Note: not all NC online newspapers will have "photo galleries" linked on their web sites. Also, many do not have text or photo archives of any depth.)
     

  • North Carolina print newspapers (shelved in Park Library)
     

  • U. S. newspaper web sites (Note: look for links on main screens for "gallery" or "photos." Also be aware that there is rarely, if ever any searchable access to photo archives.)
     

  • Photojournalists (contact directly)
     

  • News photo researchers (check with Park Librarian and her network)

Suggested search strategies:

  • Open one of the Sources listed above and enter one of the Key Search Terms [Note: not all search terms will work in all sources. You must experiment.]
     

  • In Lexis/Nexis Academic: select "Sources," enter Palm Beach Post, select date, enter in search box TYPE (stand alone art). Note that you'll get only the "cutline" or text, no image(s). Lexis/Nexis is a text database; text databases do not have images or graphics.

  • In America's Newspapers: click on North Carolina, enter search terms, e.g., CAPTION "photo feature." Note America's newspapers is a text database and does not offer images or graphics.
     

  • In Google - Images: select Advanced Search, enter photojournalism essays. Note: you will get some useful and some not-so-useful hits. Take time to browse the retrieved images.
     

  • In Google - News: select Advanced News Search, enter photo essays in "exact phrase" search box. Browse the images. Some links will offer accompanying text.
