Dear colleagues,
It is with great sadness and a deep sense of personal loss that I am passing on
the news of the death of Jacci Cenacveira, the News Research manager in the
Los Angeles Times' Editorial Library.
Jacci had been dealing with lupus, and as a consequence, renal failure. Because
of the dialysis to control the kidneys, she eventually developed calciphylaxis.
The ultimate cause of death was an infection that her weakened system could not
fight.
Jacci was the perfect news librarian -- smart, funny, fast, and unflappable. She
started in the news library at the St. Pete Times, came to California and the
Daily News, and fortunately for us, landed at the Times in 1992.
The editorial library, and the Times will not be the same without her. Jacci's
husband, Victor Bolden, is planning a memorial service and we will let you know
the details.
-- Peter Johnson, on behalf of my colleagues in the Times' Editorial Library.

Dear Los Angeles Times,
You're so right about Jacci--smart, funny, and unflappable....and may I add, a
strong voice for minorities in the media.
My condolences to you all.

Dear Colleagues:
This is very sad news! I worked once with her in the Diversity Cte. The first
time I ever attended an SLA Conference was because she invited me to be part of
a panel. I remember she thanked me with a very gracious note and a beautiful
present: a brass, MET Museum business card case I still have.
She was always recruiting me and other people to work on the News Division. She
recruited me for the Diversity Cte, of course, and to be a candidate for a
position I didn't get. She always emphasized the importance of participating.
She was curious about places and people, very interested in what was going on
with you and your career. I told her once how much I loved the Getty Museum and
she sent me a copy of the LAT supplement they published when the Museum was open
in the 1980s. She sent it and said, very proud, that she had been part of the
research team that put it together!
I will miss her ...

Peter a.o.,
This is such a very sad news. My condolences to everyone of LA Times, her
family, friends a.s.o. I remember Jacci form Minneapolis conference on "News
Libraries in Crisis" and the LA's SLA conference. There I visited the Getty
museum and later on, on my special request, Jacci gently shipped me a copy of
the
LA Times special about the opening of this marvelous museum, one of the most
beautiful places in the world. Since then, I still own her one, unfortunately,
we never got that far. I'm very sorry about that. This is a great loss for all
of us, the whole worldwide community of news librarians. I'll never forget her,

Dear Peter,
So sorry to hear about Jacci Cenacveira and I would like to extend
my deepest and most sincere sympathies to her family and the staff of the Los
Angeles Times. We met about 5 years ago at an SLA Conference. She was very good
at organizing group dinners for News Librarians with diverse ethnicity and it
was at one of these dinners that we met. Sadly when she became ill we did not
meet and she was a definite miss, especially the interaction and networking that
she did.
I've been attending SLA since 1993 and News Librarians with diverse
ethnicity are far, few and between. Their numbers are small and if there are
more of them perhaps they are not fortunate enough to come to SLA so we could
meet them. Jacci was one that stood out in the crowd. She will be a temendous
loss.

News
Librarians Getting the Story
By Jalyn Kelley
News Librarians can contribute to the newsroom in ways both big and
small and to stories both big and small.
No story has been bigger at the
Los Angeles Times recently than the controversy that ensued
after the Times devoted its entire Sunday magazine to coverage of the
Staples Center, a sports arena and entertainment venue. After
publication, it was revealed that the Times had agreed to split
the advertising profits from that issue with the Staples Center.
Times editors and reporters complained they had not known of the
profit-sharing arrangement. More than 300 Times journalists
signed a petition demanding an apology from their publisher.
In the midst of the newsroom uproar over the issue, David Shaw was
investigating and writing while Senior Research Librarian Jacci
Cenacveira was researching. In December, a 14-page special section ran
presenting the results of the six-week investigation into the
controversy, the circumstances surrounding it and the impact it had on
the newsroom.
Jacci had this to say about the
experience: "We (David and I) have always been a good team and David is
always generous with research credit. Although I would not have wished
for the circumstances under which it occurred, never have I been more
pleased and proud of a research project than I am of this finished
product." |
