Good friends and distinguished guests, I beg
your indulgences this evening in the slight departure from traditional
honorary speech format. |
I'm sure you all read the wonderful biography of
Katherine Ann Foley written by Gin Everett which appeared in the winter
2001 News Library News. |
And not too long ago, Elli Briscoe presented a
truly encompassing portrait of Kathy when she was presented with the Agnes
Henebry roll of honor award. |

What has Kathy meant to your career? |
I
first met Kathy years ago when I was working at the Star Tribune in
Minneapolis. I was planning a trip to Washington, D.C. and called Kathy to
see if I could visit the Washington Post Library while I was in town. |
She
gladly set up a time to show me around. And of course she shared her
special enthusiasm for news librarianship with me. |
I still remember that one of the many things we talked about that
day was television --neither of us really knew what television libraries
were doing at that point but we both thought it would be exciting territory
to explore. |
Little did I know that a few years hence I would join CNN in Atlanta. - Debra Bade, CNN |

Describe what you consider to be Kathy's greatest contribution to |
news
librarianship. |
“I’ve
never worked alongside anyone who I respected more for her intelligence or
loved more for her kindness and patience and friendship. |
At her Washington Post farewell party, Ben Bradlee came down from
his office to wrap her in a bear hug. He knew what a difference she had
made for the whole newsroom. |

The Kathy Foleys don’t come to this banquet to receive this award
every year. You are blessed if they
come among you during your professional lifetime. I know I was. There are Kwapil winners and there are Kwapil
legends. You are sharing your evening with one this year.” |

Throughout her remarkable career as a journalist, news researcher,
and editor, Kathy has distinguished herself as an innovative leader and
technology pioneer. |
Here at the San Antonio Express-News, Kathy has transformed an
archaic, clip and file department hidden in some basement offices into a
cutting edge news research department peopled by highly trained |
