Getting Started

  • To log on to Bloomberg:

    Type in the name and password 
    [login PARKLIB    password JOMC
    provided and press the green <GO> key.

  • How to Navigate Bloomberg:

    To move further down the page, press the yellow <PAGE FORWRD> key.

    To move back up the page, press the yellow <PAGE BACKWRD> key.

    To get back out of a menu, press the yellow <MENU> key.

  • To get to the Main Menu:

    If you are unsure of where you are at within the Bloomberg system,you can always type the letters 'MAIN' and then press <GO>; to get you back to the main menu screen.

    Hint: Always be sure that the cursor is in the upper left hand corner before typing in a command, unless a text box is provided.

    Also, there are four screens that open up when you log on to Bloomberg, one and two are on the right screen and three and four are on the left. If you close any of the screens,instead of minimizing them, you will be automatically logged out of the database.

  • General Help:

    Type in the term or name you are searching, then press the green <HELP> key once.

    This is especially helpful if you are not certain which menu to look for a particular topic.

Company Information & Research

  • Company's Equity Main Menu:

    First, do you have the ticker symbol?

    *Most of the short-cuts presented here use the company's ticker symbol.

    If no, simply type in TK, then <GO>. Type in the company's name you wish to research and then press <GO>.

    example:

    TK <GO>
    Embrex <GO>

    Note: When you click on the company ticker symbol, this will take you to the 'Related Securites' menu.

    If yes, type in the ticker symbol, press the yellow <F8 EQUITY> key, then <GO>.

    From this menu you can search historical data, current news, graphs, analyst statistics, or a list of all the functions within the EQUITY menu

    example:

    EMBX<EQUITY><GO>
    press the green <F1 HELP> key, and <GO>.

    From the menu, select with your mouse option '10) COMPANIES:EQTY & DEBT'and select the ticker symbol of the company you wish to research.

  • Company Description:

    Enter the ticker symbol, the yellow <EQUITY> key, DES, then <GO>.

    This will provide you with a 10 page mini-prospectus and vital statistics of the company you entered.

  • SEC Filings & Forms:

    Type in the ticker symbol, <EQUITY> key, the letters 'CF', and <GO>.

    example:

    EMBX <EQUITY> CF <GO>

    This will provide a listing of SEC filings for Embrex alone.

    To look up the most current SEC filing, simply type the letters 'CF' and <GO>.

Q.) Unsure what the SEC filing codes mean?

A.) Look on the Securities Exchange website here.

 
  • Brands & Subsidiaries:

    To find a company's brands and/or subsidiaries, look under the 'Related Securities' menu.

    type in the ticker symbol, <EQUITY> key, the letters 'RELS', and <GO>.

    If the brand or subsidiary is available, a link will be displayed on the bottom half of the chart.

  • Corporate Web pages:

    To find a company's web page,

    type in the ticker symbol, <EQUITY> key, the letters 'CWP', and <GO>.

  • Corporate Officers:

    Type in the ticker symbol, <EQUITY> key, the letters 'MGMT', and <GO>.

  • Current news specific to the company you are researching:

    Type in the ticker symbol, <EQUITY> key, the letters 'CN', and <GO>.

  • Bloomberg Quote:

    Type in the ticker symbol, the exchange code (i.e. US), <EQUITY>, the letters 'BQ', and <GO>.

    On one screen this will provide you with Company News, Relative Value to other companies, Intraday Graphs, and more. You can also customize this screen for your specific needs.

  • Analyst Reports:
  • Type in the ticker symbol, <EQUITY> key, and the letters 'ANR', and press <GO>.

  • Ananlyst Coverage:
  • Type in the ticker symbol, <EQUITY> key, and the letters 'ANC', and <GO>.

  • Historical Data:

    Type in the ticker symbol, <EQUITY> key, and the letters 'TE', and <GO>.

    When the graph appears, click on the 'NEWS' tab at the top of the graph. A red vertical line will appear and move with your cursor. This will help indicate which dates you would like to pull the news from.

    Other historical graphs and charts can also be found under the company's Equity Main Menu options (see above).

    Hint: Once you are searching in the company's equity menu, you no longer need to type the ticker symbol or press the <EQUITY> key.

  • example:

    EMBX <EQUITY> <GO>

    MGMT <GO>

    With this search we were able to find the company officers without needing to type in the ticker symbol twice or pressing the <EQUITY> key twice. Keep in mind, however, that if you are in another menu (ex. Government) you will need to enter the ticker symbol and press the <EQUITY> key for the database to understand your request.


Current Events

One of the features that makes Bloomberg such a powerful source of information is that Bloomberg's news is covered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and constantly updating every second.

  • Main News Menu:

    Type the letter 'N', and press <GO>.

    This will provide you with all the available news and research menus from where you can begin searching.

  • To see the day's top news stories:

    Type in the letters 'TOP' and press <GO>.

  • Multimedia news and special reports:

    Type the letters 'AV', and press <GO>.

    This is where you can find audio recordings as well as the transcripts.

  • New Products:

    Type the letters 'NI', space, then 'NP'and press <GO>.

    This will provide current listings of new products that are continually updated.

  • People:

    Type the name of the person you are researching and then press <HELP>

    Type the letters 'NI', space, then 'LAW' and press <GO>.

  • To find information on market shares:

    Type the letters 'NI', space, then 'INDSTATS' and press <GO>.

  • To look at stock markets around the world, on real-time basis:

    Type the letters 'WEI' and press <GO>.

  • To search the news by keyword:

    Type the letters 'TNI' and press <GO>.
