Book Collection
Search the UNC Library Catalog.
Park Library's holdings are cataloged with the UNC Library Catalog. An
estimated 85 percent of our nearly 5,000 books can be searched in this online
catalog.
For books in our collection that
have not yet been cataloged, please check the listing at this URL.
Reference Books (atlases, dictionaries, encyclopedias, SRDS, Simmons Market
Research, stylebooks, quotations, and the like) are located in the twin alcoves in the
Main Reading Area. Help yourself to any of these valuable reference books, but please
re-shelve them in their proper places. As with our other materials, these materials are for
Park Library use only.
Serials and Journals
Current issues of professional and trade publications are displayed on the
serial shelving on the far side of The Park Library. They are arranged alphabetically by
serial title. Our serials collection, including newspapers, has
approximately 235 titles. As with all Park Library materials, serials, too, are for
Library use only.
Please help yourself to the serials and then please return them to their proper
place. Our Library does not retain back issues of popular magazines; they are
recycled. Back issues of scholarly and professional journals are located in the Stacks
Area. Since the Stacks are closed to all but Park Library Staff, students must complete
the Reserved Reading Request Forms for desired materials; the Park Library staff on duty
will retrieve them. Again, these materials, too, are for library use only.
Check out the list of the serials that are kept in our Park Library Stacks.
Newspapers
Newspapers (recent issues only) are shelved on the counter in front of
the serials on the far side of The Park Library. Newspapers include many but
not all North Carolina daily
and non-daily editions and a selection of US metropolitan newspapers such as The New
York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today.
Check out a list of NC newspapers available at the Park Library.
The Park Library does not subscribe to international papers; Davis Library on the UNC-CH
campus offers a selection of these papers as well as major metropolitan
newspapers. Consult the UNC Online Catalog and search by the newspaper's
flag or name. Newspapers back issues are not stored in The Park Library.
For directions for gaining access to selected newspapers; archives (as well as other
North Carolina media), please consult the UNC Online Catalog. Some of North
Carolina, U.S., and international archives are available on microfilm.

Reserved Readings
(Please have your course syllabi ready)
Photocopies for selected JoMC courses are arranged in file boxes labeled
according to course numbers and located at the Reference Desk. Complete Reserved Reading
Request Forms and present them to The Park Library staffer on duty. These materials may be
photocopied. They are for library use only. JoMC faculty teaching courses
may provide The Park Library with up to four (4) copies of each reading they
wish to place on reserve here. Instructors should place copies in manila
folders with JoMC course number, instructor's name, and title
of the reading. These folders will be returned to each instructor at the
end of the semester.
Reserved books for selected JoMC courses are purchased each
semester and arranged by course number in cabinets behind the
Reference Desk. To gain access to these materials, students follow the same procedure as stated
above. Remember, too, that these books are also for library use only; books
and reserved materials do not circulate beyond The Park Library. For access to other
books in The Park Library not assigned to reserved readings, check the
UNC Library catalog or at
The Park Library's Reference Desk.
Audio/Video Collection
The Park Library collection includes a series of video tapes covering topics related to journalism and mass communication. These tapes are reserved exclusively for use by JoMC faculty for instructional
purposes. A catalog of the library's
audio/video materials is available online, alphabetized by title.
Reports and Proceedings
The Park Library also keeps a collection of reports and conferences proceedings
(also known as gray literature). Viewers will find not only
subject access, but also a separate listing of report publishers and sponsoring
organizations. Note the links to related spreadsheets ("Using this Spreadsheet"
and "Sponsoring Organizations" on this file. Please see the librarian at the reference desk for more information.
A description of the
gray literature is found in this scope note.
This collection is
classified under the same system as our books and monographs.
The Spearman Collection
The Spearman collection, which contains books authored by JoMC faculty and alums, is located in illuminated glass display cases to the right and outside of
The Park Library entrance. Faculty authored book collection is located in
similar display cases just to the right inside The Park Library entrance.
Learn more about Walter Spearman and the collection.
Charles Kuralt Collection
Visitors to The Park Library will discover the Kuralt
Kiosk at the entrance to the library which offers over 200 videos of Kuralt's "On the Road" series and his CBS Sunday Morning news programs.
Kuralt's papers are archived in the UNC-CH Southern Historical Collection located in the Wilson Round Library on UNC's campus.
