Facilities and Services

Take a virtual tour of the Park Library.

Databases

Lexis/Nexis is available on two designated terminals in the Main Reading Area. Unless students have had extensive experience in searching this full-text, command-driven database, it is wise to take advantage of the basic hour-long training sessions (taught by an experienced Lexis/Nexis searcher) offered in The Park Library’s Computer Lab. Please see a library staffer if you are interested in attending a session.

For online access to a broad spectrum of scholarly, trade, and popular communication databases (in bibliographic, full text and abstract formats), please check Davis Library's electronic  resources.

Our Park Library offers access to Bloomberg's Financial Services through its dedicated terminal. Learn more about how to use this exceptional resource.

Computer Labs (CAR and Multimedia Labs)

Two computer labs are located in The Park Library. The CAR Lab (computer assisted research) has 12 computers and one instructor's terminal. There is an overhead data projector to facilitate instruction. Full internet access is available through the UNC Campus broadband. Software on the instructor's terminal includes Altiris Vision, ASTOUND!, Lexis-Nexis Research 7.1, MindPath Presentation F/X 5.1, AdPlus, in addition to SPSS 10.0 and the full suite of Microsoft applications.  Student computers in The CAR Lab are equipped with everything except: Lexis-Nexis, ASTOUND!, and Altiris Vision.

The Multimedia Lab has three PCs, three scanners (two Epson Expression 800 flatbed scanners), a videocassette player, a slide projector, and a color printer. Software includes Adope Photoshop 5.5, Extensis Portfolio 4.9, Macromedia Director 7, Quick Time, Real Audio, and TextBridge. For access to this equipment, check with Park Library staff.

Printers

The Park Library has a UniPrinter which services all the computers in the general reading/work area including the Computer Research Lab. The UniPrinter requires a UNC One Card. Copies cost ten cents ($.10) per page. There is no connection to the UniPrinter from student lap top computers. In order to documents from lap tops, students must save documents to a floppy disk and then search for one of the Park Library Computers from which to access the UniPrinter.

One color printer is available to students working on course projects. Check with Park Library staff on  duty in order to secure access to it.

Photocopiers

The Park Library has one photocopier for students and faculty. UNC One Cards are required to make photocopies. To JoMC faculty our Library can offer a special "faculty photocopy card" for exclusive use in our Park Library. Copies cost fourteen cents ($.14) per page.

Laptop Access

There are six connections in The Park Library for personal laptop computers. Before students can connect their laptops to the campus network, they will need to check with the Park Library staff for directions. Our Library is now wireless so that students with properly equipped laptops may connect to the Campus broadband without using an electric cord. It is not possible to print documents from a wireless laptop. It will be necessary for students to copy their documents to a floppy disk and then insert the disk into the A-drive of any Library computer and then rely upon the Library's UniPrinter.

Wireless Access

The entire Park Library is completely wireless. Students and faculty with properly configured lap tops can easily connect with the Campus server to gain access to the Internet, the Web, and online Davis Library databases. Lap top computers must be installed with  802.11-compliant wireless network cards which are properly registered and configured in order to function properly. Note that there is no printer access for lap top computers; files must be save to diskettes and then transferred to other Park Library computers before printing from the UniPrinter.
