DISPATCHES FROM JOHANNESBURG
[Note: Carolyn's dispatches were originally posted to NewsLib. More details and photos to follow.]

Here I am starting my first full day in Africa.  Jerri Eddings and I have just settled down for a full day at F.A.M.E. preparing for the CNN workshop on Monday. My workshop will be on Thursday.

The travel was uneventful. All went well. The flight from JFK was FULL not a seat to be had. However, in the middle of the night we landed on Sal Island, A speck in the Atlantic Ocean, where half the passengers got off. The population for Sal Island is only 6,000. I think they were all on my plane and had been on holiday. (smile)

It is winter here and the days are nice but COLD at night. I did not bring enough warm clothes.

Hello everyone,

The CNN African Journalist of the Year Award Gala on Wednesday night was fantastic. The winners in various categories had tremendous stories to tell. They were very well presented by print, radio, television or
photojournalism. The Journalist of the year was from SABC and the stories she produced did not leave a dry eye in the house. What an impact.

The African fashions were spectacular. I got photos. (Details when I return)

Thursday journalism student workshop was outstanding. I had twenty nine seniors in attendance. The workshop was half day and could have gone all day. They were eager to learn about news research. The live online research was a big hit. They had projects they were working on and I was able to send them back to school with the research they needed. (more details to come)

See you next week.

Going to game park to see wild animals on Friday. Saturday will go the Apartheid Museum.

Carolyn
