JACKIE CHAMBERLAIN

I'm Jackie Chamberlain, Library Director of the Press-Enterprise, a 119-year old paper family-owned until our recent purchase by Belo. Our circulation is about 162,000 daily/170,000 Sun. We publish 8 editions every day -- unique editions, not just a little ad juggling.

I have been doing this for 25 years, and have been director for that last 6 years. We have a staff of 7 (including me), all full time. With those 7 we cover the Library 72 hours a week (God forbid that someone get sick when someone's off or on vacation, but of course it happens.) We've been online for 5 years, starting out with DataTimes. For 24 years before that we manually indexed the paper daily (at the time we had fewer than 8 editions thank god.)

I came to the Library by way of a brief stint on the copy desk after 10 years of teaching writing and literature at the University of California, Riverside. It was accidental, and serendipitous (though like you all, there are days when I wonder!). Barbara, you know Joan Huffman Minesinger Douglas. It was her fault.
