Pictured at the News Division SLA Awards Banquet
in Seattle, WA in June 1997 are Carolyn Hardnett St. Petersburg
Times (left) and Joyce McMillin Christian Science
Monitor.
[Here is a quote from Carolyn Hardnett's email message sent to the NewsLib
list upon hearing about Joyce's passing.]
"I had discovered in Seattle that Joyce loved Gospel music and I had
told her about my church choir. I made her a tape of all our best
hymns for her to listen to while she was here and to take home. She
was so excited. She had already promised to send canberry jelly
beans my favorite."
I will miss my newest friend and colleague and this Sunday at my
church I will dedicate a hymn in her memory".

Caught in the luxurious women's "toilette with a view from the 42nd
floor," of Seattle's Columbia Tower, are News Division members
(clockwise from left) Justin Scroggs from Time, Inc., John Cronin
of the Boston Herald, Joyce McMillin with Christian Science
Monitor, and Jody Habayeb of the Fort Wayne
Journal-Gazette.
[Note: here is a quote from Justin Scrogg's email message following the
announcment of Joyce's passing.]
She was always up to something be it an early morning
walk, a late night dip in the jacuzzi, smuggling groceries
into the Arizona Biltmore because prices at the restaurants
were outrageous, or smuggling Cronin of Boston and me into
the Ladies room at the News Division Awards Banquet
`because you just have to see the view.'
I'll certainly miss McMillan of Boston.

with The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC]

[What follows is a narrative of Joyce McMillin's friends and
colleagues that appeared on the NewsLib list shortly after the
announcement came from John Dillin, Managing Editor of the Christian
Science
Editor, about the loss of our Joyce. The tributes to Joyce were so
spontaneous, warm,
heartfelt, and sometimes brightly funny, that I decided to prepare a web
page in Joyce McMillin's memory.
Further down on this page you'll discover messages from News Division
members Thai Strom, Don Pine, Paulo Ramirez, Carolyn Hardnett, Justin
Scroggs, Ginny Everett, Leigh Montgomery, John Cronin, Cary Kenny, MJ
Crowley, Carolyn Edds, and Suzy Seibert.
By the way, some people are unaware that John Dillin is Ginny Hauswald's
brother, or maybe one should say that Dillin's sister is Ginny
Hauswald. Apparently newspapers continue to run in people's families.
Chris Hardesty found some memorable snapshots from his Seattle
SLA conference collection. He brought them to my library, I scanned them,
and then added them to the page along with the email messages I cached
earlier.
So, this is a salute to Joyce for her professionalism and her enthusiastic
zest for life from those that held her in high esteem and warm
affection.]

Dear Barbara Semonche:
My sister, Virginia Hauswald, asked that I forward this staff announcement to
you about Joyce McMillin. The last two sentences are no longer
operable...Joyce's son decided that in lieu of a memorial service, he would
prefer that a memorial fund be set up in his mother's name. Friends of hers at
the paper now have launched the fund (CSPS/The Joyce McMillin Fund), and
contributions have begun coming in from close friends and Monitor staff. The
fund is being used to provide Monitor subscriptions to Peace Corps volunteers
(a particular love of Joyce's), and others who request them, such as inmates at
prisons. Those who knew Joyce may send cards, if they wish, to her son, Robbie
McMillin, in care of the Monitor editor. The address:
Robbie McMillin

The Christian Science Monitor
One Norway Street
Boston, MA 02115
Thanks very much.

Here is the memo that went out on the Monitor email system:

RE: Joyce McMillin
Our friend and colleague Joyce McMillan passed away this afternoon at Beth
Israel Hospital. Two Monitor staff members were with her when she passed.
Joyce was fiercely loyal to the Monitor and dedicated to strengthening its
library. Joyce had been with the Monitor since 1971 when she went to work for
the Advertising Department. In 1973 she moved to the Controller Department,
then in 1981 became a computer operator for the old Information Services
Department. Joyce joined the Monitor Library staff in 1986 and in December,
1995, was awarded a Master's Degree in Library Science from Simmons College.
The Monitor was not her only love. Joyce reveled in travel and visited a host
of countries including the former Soviet Union, East and West Germany,
Czechoslovakia, Greece, Egypt, and Israel. Most of all, Joyce loved her
family. After some challenging years, Joyce was reunited with her son Robbie,
a wonderful man who spent many hours with her at Beth Israel. Joyce was the
extremely proud grandmother of Britanny.
Robbie was deeply grateful for the love and care the Monitor staff showered on
him and his mother. At this writing, he is in transit to Boston and
arrangements for a memorial service are incomplete. We will keep you posted as
plans develop.

Colleagues:
Joyce no longer with us?!? I'm in shock! Suddenly I remember her vividly
and the week we're together at the Poynter Institute with a dozen other
news librarians in February 97. A caring, down-to-earth, and cheerful
individual. I remember one afternoon she and John Cronin and I walked to
downtown St Pete for lunch. On the way back, we passed by a house with a
couple of huge bushes of colorful roses. She wanted to have a picture taken
with them and pulled me into the picture as well, with John playing
photographer. She wrapped her right, heavy arm around my small shoulder
with her hand holding a big cup of soft drink which would look like it was
sitting on my shoulder. So I asked her gently whether she would like to
have that huge, colorfully-designed cup in the picture for souvenir as
well. She laughed, looking for a spot to place the cup out of sight (I
never saw the picture, though). Meaningless incident that came back
suddenly as I read Barbara's forwarded message of her death, in shock but
with a little, almost tearful smile. Isn't it interesting that little
things stay with us and fill us with warmth more than anything else?
Joyce, rest peacefully. You are remembered warmly.

I too appreciated Thai's delicate thoughts about Joyce, which also
reminded me of our time together at Poynter. I didn't know her well but she
was dedicated to changing that fact. Joyce insisted on being part of any
discussion, and part of any party after we left the classroom.
I was stunned by news of her death, and I am sorry she will not be
coming up to me as usual at SLA demanding to know how things are going at
the AP, and asking a question or two that she had stored away since we last
met.
If there is any way that these messages are getting back to her son,
he should know that even those of us who didn't know her well were
impressed by, and will remember, her gentle soul.

I didn't know Joyce much more than any of the other librarians that went
to Poynter last year, but even that was enough to be shocked and
terribly sad about her death. Thai's anecdote was absolutely accurate to
define the kind of feelings that one had during those brief moments with
Joyce: deep sympathy, kindness, and a sense that one could count on her
at any time. It's really strange to miss a person that you heard about
only once in a while, but that's how I feel now. My condolences to
everyone that had the privilege to know her better.

Dear Friends,
Joyce and I roomed together in Seattle at SLA conference. We had so
much fun. We discovered we had a lot in common as we liked and
disliked many of the same things.
I met her for the first time at the conference in Boston. She did not
really know many people, but I did of course, and she asked that I
might introduce her to all the fun folks. I made sure she met
everyone. WE started to email each other and share family stories.
So we decided to room together in Seattle so she could learn my SLA
party habits. She was a very good student.
When Joyce and Cronin of Boston came to Poynter I was their airport
shuttle and tour guide. We hit all the hot spots of Tampa Bay
including Winn Dixie so they could get snacks for their rooms.
I had discovered in Seattle that Joyce loved Gospel music and I had
told her about my church choir. I made her a tape of all our best
hymns for her to listen to while she was here and to take home. She
was so excited. She had already promised to send canberry jelly beans
my favorite.
She talked to me about her son and her granddaughter both of whom she
loved dearly. She couldn't wait to email me when she returned from
her big trip last year.
I will miss my newest friend and colleague and this Sunday at my
church I will dedicate a hymn in her memory.

Fellow newslibbers:
What a tribute to Joyce that she touched so many of our lives. Like some
of the other folks who have posted messages, I met Joyce at Poynter. We
walked faithfully every morning before class and had far-ranging,
thought-provoking and just plain fun convers ations.
In seminar discussions, Joyce offered thoughtful advice and thought out
loud about her own situation in new ways. Joyce left Poynter totally
energized and it was great to see the results that she was able to
achieve.
Determined. Kind. Generous. Devoted. Full of energy. She was all of those
things and more. It's almost impossible to believe that she is no longer
with us.
She had a good heart and she will be missed.

Greetings all:
I wanted to thank you for your kind words about our librarian and friend,
Joyce McMillin.
The news, politics, appreciation of other cultures, libraries new and old
were but a few of her many interests. Joyce was absolutely dedicated to our
newspaper and this profession. She loved meeting new colleagues and many of
your names and recollections are familiar as she would enthusiastically
describe her experiences to us upon her return from SLA or Poynter.
Don Pine of AP asked if these messages might be shared with her son, and I
will do so.

Barbara - Such sad, sad news about Joyce. I'm thinking perhaps
we have you to thank for that lovely message by the Managing
Editor at the Christian Science Monitor.
I simply don't know what we would do without you and the
wonderful listserv. It keeps us bonded and caring, and I've
come to realize over the past year, how MUCH it keeps us all at
peak function. I'm not a bean counter, but I wish there WERE
some way to measure how much we all grow professionally through
association with Newslib.
As ALWAYS, Thank You!

Thai, thanks for your thoughtful rememberance of Joyce. In the brief time
that we knew her, Joyce had made her distinctive contribution to the news
library profession and, needless to say, was planning to do even more! I am
glad to say that I had a positive influence on her decision to become a
librarian, attend Library School and become active in News libraries.
But most all I will miss a good, loyal and sincere friend. One of her
comstant good-natured barbs consisted of chiding me for appropriating the
"Cronin of Boston"" handle, cuz she always wanted to be "McMillin of
Boston"! Well here's to McMillin of Boston"; Rest in Peace, my friend.

Barbara,
What a great idea for remembering Joyce.
When I think of Joyce, I will always remember a woman with a smile
on her face and a very enthusiastic supporter of the News Division. Joyce
was always willing to help.
I was shocked when I read your post to NewsLib about her death.
Thai used the phrase "in shock but with a little, almost tearful smile."
That is how I felt. I was at Poynter the week she was there. The end of
the week was an emotional experience for me and at our final session,
tears came to my eyes. When it was Joyce's turn to speak, she had tears
in her eyes as well. She blamed it on me. She said if someone else had
not started it, she would not have cried. I bet not.
Her participation on NewsLib are evidence of how much she cared
for the profession and her loyalty to her organization. Many of her posts
provided information about stories on their website or how to search the
Christian Science Monitor archives on their website. It will be strange
not to see her smiling face at SLA this year.
I have collected her 1997 and 1998 posts to NewsLib and a couple to
NICAR-L and put them in a Word Document. I was wondering if you would
like to include any snippets from her posts on the memorial website?
Perhaps it is not appropriate but I thought I would run the idea past you.
I did not attach the document with this message because it is 18 pages and
thought I should check with you first before sending such a long file.
Thanks again to you and Chris for developing this page.

Barbara, I just found out a few minutes ago about Joyce's passing from an
old friend of mine, Chris Atkin, married to Ross Atkin of the Christian
Science Monitor. I did not know Joyce in a professional context but as a
friend and fellow Christian Scientist.
I have known her since 1974, and I was looking forward to seeing her on my
next trip to Boston in a few days. Joyce always had a ready smile, a
spontaneous laugh, and great gratitude and appreciation for the important
things in life -- God, family, friends, and the family of man.
Like everyone else, I am stunned at the news.
I do know that she knows that her source of life is divine and eternal.
Thank you so very much for providing this webpage for Joyce. It is a
great comfort and a great tribute to a very-much-loved and talented woman,
McMillin of Boston.
