BIO BRIEF

Marcia MacVane has been the Reader Services Manager for the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram since January 1991. (The Reader Services Manager manages the library and newsclerk areas). There are 4 library assistants and eight newsclerks.

My history with the company has been long and varied. Beginning straight out of high school in 1966 (and don't start counting years!), I worked mainly in the library, but had the opportunities also to work in the sports department, the "society" department, bureau clerk, and as a "telephone answerer" for some of the most -feared executives at the company in the late 60's. I left the company for about three years to teach school in the early 80's and have worked here again since 1983.

My early experience with the newspaper gave me an education which complemented my later role as Reader Services Manager. Working hand-in-hand with the newsroom seemed completely natural to me, although it had never been handled that way before.

In early 1992, our library began electronically capturing news stories on the MediaStream SAVE system. In 1996 we began archiving photos electronically under our own "home-grown" system.

In 1998, we changed our front-end system...and thus begins a sorrowful saga that has yet to reach a successful conclusion, but has provided excellent fodder for the topic of my speech!

A native Mainiac, I have three children and three grandchildren - 4,2, and six months. We spend summers at the lake in the family cottage and winters waiting for summer to come again! Each year we try to take one trip in the United States and especially enjoy hiking at Glacier and Zion National Parks and traveling in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, the Dakotas and Montana.

This is my second year as chair (? - not sure if this is the right title) of the Small Libraries Division of the Special Libraries Association. I have written a column on Small Libraries for NewsLibraryNews for two years and I spoke at the Atlanta conference on purchasing text archiving systems.
