1998
[Note: This report was prepared by NC/SLA Public Relations Chair,
Ellen Leadem, who also is responsible for the accompanying photographs of
the Chapter honorees.]
The
University Club in Durham served as the setting for the annual
business meeting and awards ceremony of the North Carolina Chapter of the
Special Libraries Association (NC/SLA). Prior to the meeting, members
were able to attend the Chapter's annual Spring Workshop entitled
"Springboard from Local Expertise".
Peggy Hull, NC/SLA President offered greetings to the membership and
congratulations to the newly elected officers. The evening concluded with
the presentation of this year's Chapter awards.
The Meritorious Achievement Award was earned by Barbara Best-Nichols, of
Reichold Chemicals, Inc. Research Triangle Park, NC. This award is
earned by an individual who has made "notable and enduring contributions
to the Chapter and to the profession, with an emphasis on local and
national leadership of an exemplary nature."

[Note: we wish to make clear that the following two awards were not
presented at NC/SLA's Chapter Awards and Honors Banquet in April, but did
involve Chapter members who were honored at SLA's annual conference in
June in Indianapolis. We felt it appropriate to include these special
announcements, with photos, on this page.]
Also announced was the award of an SLA Affirmative Action Scholarship
from the national association, in the amount of $6,000.00 to Tamika
Barnes, graduate student in the School of Library and Information Science, NCCU. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academics, aptitude,
interest in Special Librarianship, and financial need.
