SLA Fellows Meeting

Philadelphia, PA
June 10, 2000

Old Business

Minutes from the 1999 Annual meeting were approved

Bios – send new/updated bios to Barbara Semonche
  semonch at metalab.unc.edu

Web site

Purpose of site is to encourage suggestions for mentoring and nominations

Buttons for Fellows

Two ideas were presented – pin with Fellows logo; gold badge

Opted to go with pin; Steve Abram will obtain the Fellows logo and his company will cover the expenses

Goal is to have these ready for the 2001 Annual Conference

Effective Use of Fellows

Explore need for a more formal "process" to help make our recommendations happen

However, don't want to sacrifice the informal structure of the group

Consider what the Fellows are best "qualified" to contribute to the membership and to the conference experience

Participate in LDI

Inform Chapter/Division members of the Fellows in their units

Encourage them to partner with Fellows for meetings (esp. on the chapter level)

S. Klopper will pull together a list of the fellows with their unit/chapter affiliations to be shared with chapter/division leadership (use Leadership listserv as vehicle for posting this information)

Mentors

Potential speakers

First Timers – market this event heavily before the Annual Conference in Leadership listserv and chapter/division communications

Promote the benefits of attending this event; need to counter feeling that one does not want to be identified as a "first timer"

Participate/influence future of association via participation on Board and newly formed Task Forces

Question: do fellows take an active role nominating candidates for awards and for the board?

Judy Field will send out an annual call to fellows to submit suggestions

New Business

Introduction and greetings of new fellows

Daniel Trefethen

Jo Anne Boorkman

Elizabeth Bibby

Richard Hulser

Sylvia Piggott

First Timers, San Antonio (2001)

Plan something fun!

Jean Scanlan , Barbara Spiegelman, Betty Edison will plan

First Timers – more ideas

Send student group advisors a list of Fellows in their areas

Follow up with First Timers after the conference

Ask their opinions – go out and seek them out rather than expect them to call on us

Many First Timers are not even sure "what" we are

Can we sponsor another event?

Need to get out in conference and our units and talk with people and help contribute to their conference experience

Letter to First Timers from Fellow

Send them a personal letter/invitation inviting them to attend the event

Work with SLA (J. Mears) to find out who these people are; many check off this box when registering

Based on this data, assign a few First Timers to each Fellow and have them conduct a personal follow-up

Barbara Semonche and Maurice Harris will be setting up a listserv for the Fellows.

General observations/suggestions to improve the conference experience

Gala – ideas to encourage more people to attend

Move event to Tuesday nite

Move event to Sunday nite and make it an all conference event

Make presentation of awards a part of the evening (doing the awards early on in the conference provides more opportunities for the winners to be recognized by their peers)

Lower the price; tie into registration fee

Don’t' isolate board/staff at same tables – get out and sit with the membership

Orientation for the Board on how to get out there and meet people

Susan Klopper agreed to be the conveener for the Fellows meeting in 2002, LA

Discussion on the Fellows Meeting at Annual Conference

Should we meet twice during the conference

At the beginning and the end (to debrief)?

Discussion on the Fellows Meeting at Winter Meeting

It was decided that the Fellows attending Winter meeting should plan a meeting
