Comparison of SLA Membership draft documents (May 19, 2000 and June 6, 2000)

Background:

In a facilitated strategic planning session in January 2000, the SLA Board of Directors selected four major areas as priority targets for change.  task forces to work on vital aspects of the future of the association. One of those areas was membership--who do we want, what do they want, and how do we provide it. Membership will be the concern of this Task Force. For further background information on SLA membership, please consult this URL http://www.sla.org/content/ memberservice/index.cfm

Assignmments: (Priority)

1. Prepare a proposal for presentation to the Board of Directors at their June Annual Meeting, 2000. Financial implications of all recommendations should be included in the proposal.

[Note: . The Task Force is requested to apply stretch and innovative thinking to the project and to look at models of other associations of similar size and mission. ]

Assignments: (TBA)

Goals of the Membership Task Force (UPDATED 6/7/00):

  • identifying the members of the future
  • expanding SLA globally
  • determining why people belong to SLA, and what they want from their membership
  • treating members as individuals
  • creating membership benefits to be relevant to new professionals and changing professionals
  • broadening SLA's recruitment efforts
  • attracting people who are attracted to e-commerce
  • focusing on mentoring
  • retaining student members after they graduate (add a young members roundtable?)
  • adopting a certification process

Communication:
All of the work of the group will be accomplished electronically or by telephone. There may be a meeting at Annual Conference at the discretion of the chair. All members of SLA will benefit from the work of this group.
Electronic mailing list will be launched as soon as all the task members will be on board.
