1. Vanderbilt University's Television News Archive         http://tvnews.vanderbilt.edu/

"The Television News Archive collection at Vanderbilt University is the world's most extensive and complete archive of television news. The collection holds more than 30,000 individual network evening news broadcasts and more than 9,000 hours of special news-related programming including `Nightline' since 1989. These special reports and periodic news broadcasts cover presidential press conferences and plitical campaign coverage, and national and international events such as the Watergate hearings, the plight of American hostages in Iran, and the Persian Gulf war. Individuals may make video tape loan requests for reference, study, classroom instruction, and research. Useful information can be found in the news abstracts themselves."

2. ABC Nightline News Videos       http://www.abcnews.go.com/onair/nightline/NightlineIndex.html

Note that current week offers on its web site both videos and transcripts. Archived Nightline programs (four weeks) offer only scripts on the web site. However, the videos are available to order, but there is a delay of 3-4 weeks and a cost of about $35. Students should be able to view any of the current web videos in The Park Library. The quality of image and sound is good if the latest version of RealPlayer in loaded on the computers.

3. MSNBC launched a Video News Portal            http://www.msnbc.com/news/default.asp

Note: To play the current videos, it is required that computers be loaded with the Windows Media Player 6.4 or greater. I don't have that version on my desktop yet, but I'll check with Fred Thomsen to see if I can download it.

The Video News Page is devoted to news reports and features on the site that include streaming video. The news portal allows users to access video clips on demand, including those clips made available by MSNBC Cable, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, The Today Show and Dateline NBC. Users can download clips from the portal on deman for 24 hours with select reports being archived on the Video News page for immediat access anytime.

Note: RealPlayer works fine, but it takes some time to scan the text/photo loaded screen to find the videos you need to play. Still the quality is good.

5.     CBS News                                                http://cbsnews.cbs.com/
Note: CBS recommends Windows Media Player for its videos which I don't have on my desktop. However it will work, but not particularly well, with RealPlayer. The sound and images is jerky and blurry using RealPlayer. This site is also loaded with images and text making it not too easy to navigate. Still, the Evening News site offers a variety of short interviews on most recent program which, while not the smoothest, are considerably larger. Also, there are scripts and bio briefs of the CBS news broadcasters.
